The Man

Mr Koji Hara, an internationally renowned custom knife maker from Japan made his first trip to Singapore in June this year. He held a mini-knife show at Sheares Marketing from the 21st to the 23rd. Mr Hara brought with him a selection of exquisite knives for all of us at Sheares to have a first hand encounter with the true meaning of the word 'Quality'. Throughout his stay here in Singapore, Mr Hara also shared his experience and knowledge concerning knife making and the knife world in general with all present. His comments and opinions showed that he was a true gentleman who would like to see the spread of knife appreciation for all to enjoy, regardless of race or status. Included below are some of the photos taken during his brief stay here as well as photos of his beautiful knives.

Preparation for Mr Hara's show included the design and printing of this custom made poster to commorate the event.

Besides promoting his knives, Mr Koji Hara also shared his experience and knowledge in the field of making knives. Here he is showing us the effect handmaking knives has on his fingers.

During his visit here, Mr Koji Hara often found himself the centre of attraction and improptu pow-wow sessions like the one above became a common sight. Many of us were curious about the way the knife industry operated in Japan and how famous people like the late Al-Mar went around designing their knives and running their businesses.

However, Mr Koji Hara also found himself demostrating some of his skills from time to time. Here he is showing a move & position from the Art of Iaido. Mr Koji Hara may be possesed with a friendly demeanor but he has a 5 Dan in Iaido! Don't mess with The Man! (Note: the Japanese Sword below is a blunt replica.)

At the end of the 3 days, it was a tough parting. Gifts were exchanged, and we went for a good dinner before finally arriving at the airport. Amid the knowledge of parting, smiles were still seen as we all knew there were furthur meetings to come in the future! Cheers!
